hey i was wondering, if i want to do maths for uni, should i do it at UNSW of Sydney Uni? which one teaches it better and has a better reputation for maths?
eg engineering for unsw, comm/law for syd
does anyone know why there's a 10 POINT uai different between advanced sci at syd and unsw? i thought both unis were approximately equals...

thanks

university of sydney offers advanced mathematics but UNSW does not but you can study pure mathematics at UNSW if you study engineering.

and university of NSW is the best university in engineering. It is the best 16th university in the world in engineering. Sydney is just a name in engineering but obviously sydney is excellent in advanced mathematics and as you may know just 3 universities offer advanced mathematics and sydney has the highest UAI=98.something

If it means anything: http://www.sciencewatch.com/may-june2002/sw_may-june2002_page2.htm

Usyd offers a talented students program which you can do with the adv sci bit i think.
Both universities are good and you're not really going to lose out on much by going to either though. I do maths at UNSW and I've got no complaints with the lecturers or anything. I can't exactally compare it with Usyd though.

Vafa: what do you mean by "advance mathematics". If you mean mathematics under "advance science", you can do that at UNSW too and you don't need to do engineering to doe pure maths, just adv science.

I think this is generally due to the greater demand for the advanced science course at usyd. When there are limited spots available and there are an excess of students applying, UAI cutoffs are pushed up to cater for these demands.

You can do maths at usyd under a normal BSc or with the BSc(Adv Maths)

UNSW offers pretty much the same thing, maths major in BSc.

This is my opinion:

I did first year maths at usyd and took the normal advanced first year courses. I did/am doing second year advanced maths (and a first year maths subject) at unsw. UNSW really goes into a lot more depth than USyd, especially in linear algebra and discrete maths (unsw effectively teaches twice as much of these areas than usyd does). The only area USyd beats unsw in during the first two years is statistics - I pretty much got a HD in a 2nd year advanced stats subject at unsw with just first year stats knowledge from usyd.

Of course, the above doesnt suggest unsw is better than usyd. From what i've seen/heard, usyd does play catch up in 2nd year. 3rd year is pretty much where you start specialising in your interest area ie. Pure/Applied/Stats.

Overall though, I really dont think it matters a whole lot, it helps if you know which area you want to get into and research into which uni is stronger in that field.

Just some things to think about :)

ok thanks
wow
u guys r so knowledgeable
i have no idea which area of maths i want to go into...
ive been inclining towards unsw anyway because my siblings all go there and i like the campus
so if i wanna do math at uni, it's bachelor of sci/advanced sci and then i major in math
cool
thanks!

Hack some maths onto biology or computers or physics or such. You'll get paid more then the typical scientist in that field, that way.
