How do our internal student ranks affect our final hsc mark or atar?

What is the process?

I heard that if student A's rank is #1 and gets a mark of about 94%, and Student B's rank is #20 (example) and gets a higher mark of about 98%, then student A who is ranked higher will take Student B's mark, even though he scored less.

Is this true ^^?? not sure if that was a good example or not..

Yes that is how it works, #1 will get an internal mark of 98 and an external mark of 94, thus his hsc mark is 96. this is assuming that 98 is a scaled mark

This is why in selective schools some people are snakes up until trials, but after that everyone helps each other during hsc to make sure all their internal marks will be boosted.

Internal student ranks affect your final hsc mark for the subject, which then affects your atar.

From what I know: The student who is ranked first internally obtains the highest external HSC mark as their internal mark (all students marks are then determined by deviation of marks yada yada), ALL students keep their OWN external HSC mark as their externals, in which your final HSC mark is an average of both your internals and externals.
