so is anyone considering taking up honours in their course?

i'm thinking of taking honours in government & int relations...but am yet to be totally convinced of the pros... for me its one more excuse to laze about uni for yet another year and delay the inevitable (me? work? industry? smeh... :D)

do you have to do honours to later be eligible for phd studies?

Basically, you complete an additional year towards your degree. That year is spent preparing a thesis on a topic within your chosen area of specialisation. You also have to complete a couple of honours subjects throughout the course of your pass degree, i.e. before your 4th year (in the case of a typical 3 year degree program). These subjects constitute both extended study in the chosen field and preparatory units for the thesis writing, like 'research skills' etc...

yeeeah credit average for your units in what you want to do your honours year in, plus all the honours preparation units
i don't know. hmm, i've been thinking about honours in govt and int. relations as well... but my course is 4 years (if i stick it out) and then that'd make it 5 years. and if i do a postgrad course that'd mean staying in uni for 8 years, which i'm DEFINITELY not prepared for.

I'm doing (hoping) honours in International Business..if I get my 71% average for IBUS subjects for the next 2 years, I can get in
additionally, I'm hoping for the uni to employ me as a tutor while i am an honours student...4th yr tutors for 1st yr subjects get paid $80 an hour!

hope to eventually do an honours degree in advanced science, and it appears that law honours are handed out on the basis of marks throughout the course....specifically no extra year....sounds like something to aim for.

Hey-- can you eventually do as many honours as you like provided you get the marks?

I'm hoping to do B LibStud(Adv) with a major in Psych, as well as in English and Gender Studies and I would like honours in all majors. There's no problem with that is there? Some lecture dude at the open day was very non-specific in a comment about the different faculties not being heaps into students doing honours in more than one or two majors.

? ?? ?

Remember you can only do 24 credit points a semester and honours year in a major will be worth 12cp's, so you can do a maximum of two. But you need faculty permission to do more!

An honours year is very intensive, quite alot of research is taken and coursework to be learnt, also you need to produce high calbre work to gain good results. Considering this, doing a maximum if 2 majors for honours would be alot on your plate as it is.

Really?
At UNSW, our honours year is worth 48CP (a normal 1 year load), so u can't do 2 honours even if u wanted to

Yeah thats the case.
The Economics & Business Faculty handbook and the Arts handbook both state that a honours year is worth 12cp!
