For the whole of 2012 I had my eyes set on Computer Science at UNSW mainly due to the flexibility of the degree and the fact that there are so many electives, as well as the idea of finishing uni in 3 years at the age of 20. Only problem is, I took a look at the electives and it doesn't seem (currently) that I'm interested in doing 12 electives, as I am allowed to. I figured 6 would be enough, but now I'm thinking of completing a bachelor of commerce along with a bachelor of science (computer science). I just have a few questions to confirm:

If I do both degrees, from the computer science course, I only miss out 6 electives (or 36 UOC), right? I complete everything else that's compulsory + the 6 electives, meaning I'm allowed to still major in something.
Although, what happens with my commerce degree? Am I still able to major in something, don't I actually have to major in something? Haha.

My ATAR is 91.35, while the course-cut off is 96.30. I've heard that the cut off for commerce/sci (or eng) is actually around 91-92, but with the HSC Plus scheme I'm granted 4 extra points under the commerce scheme, but under the Computer Science department I'm only granted 1. ;3 Which one should I follow? I'm also granted extra points from EAS but I'm not sure how many, so right now it seems that I could possibly be ~4 points below the cut-off.

Help?

EDIT: Over here, there is no CompSci major under the science field - http://www.asb.unsw.edu.au/futurest...elorofcommercebachelorofscience.aspx#2=Degree structure

Yet here it is:

With the combined degree I'm pretty sure that you only miss out on the free electives, not the comp ones.

There is a set of 96uoc for the commerce side and then you have to pick another group of electives to compete the commerce major. You do the core component in the first 1-3 years and major in the 4th year (generally)

The cutoff for commerce is quite high. You need to look at the dual degree hsc plus one, not just commerce.

NOTE THAT COMP SCI IS RUN BY THE SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, UNDER THE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING, and therefore not done by the faculty of science.

Hope it helps

EDIT: check the 2013 handbook. You are referring to the 2011 one.

Dual degree on HSC Plus, is that combined commerce?

If I can major in something in both the compsci and commerce, then sweet.

Yeah I'm aware, but under the engineering (HSC Plus) I only get 1 point from it, but the Commerce Combined I get 4 points.

Just to clarify, you don't really Major in anything with comp sci.
You get a science degree majoring in computing, and to get this there are some streams you can take to focus on an area you like if you wish to follow a structured program.
The specialisation is just a guide and will not impact on your degrees or career in the future. So if I were you, pick other subjects you like.

As for commerce, you should get the 4 points. As a guide look for the uac code and match it with hsc plus, since that's what uac uses to calculate your bonus points and your entry atar.
However that degree is sitting at 96.30 and may increase again this year.

If you are eager to get out of uni then just stick with one degree. ;)

I think it is just next to impossible to finish double degrees in 3 years. Unless you want to study more in the summer. Commerce courses in the summer involve paying your own fees.

Thanks for the help everyone, but how do I know if I get the major in comp sci since it's the only one not displayed there?

It is listed here: http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/programs/2013/3529.html

If you get in, you will be enrolled into Commerce/Science. You have to declare your Science major (i.e. Computer Science) before starting any Level 2 courses (i.e. COMP2xxx or FINS2xxx etc.)

Make sure you follow the 2013 handbook, you previously linked to the 2011 handbook, and that may be different do your commencing year.

Yeah I realised that, just the inconsistencies made me worry. I've placed Comp Sci alone as my 1st preference, forget commerce. :3

Thanks everyone for their help.
