This might be a really dumb question but are we allowed to take first year courses (ie the ones starting with the number 1 - eg. MATH1131) in the second year of our degree?

I did 4 level 1 courses in my second year

yes you can but it might not be a good idea since your 2nd year courses may have MATH1131 as a prerequisite and you have not met it. It is best to follow your degree plan

I'm doing 3 first year courses right now as a second year, so yes you can.

For example: the program that I'm in limits 72 UoC (12 courses roughly) for first year courses to be studied. So its best to read your handbook for stuff like progression in a program.
