So I'm starting the BE ME Electrical Engineering course this year and I wanted to do MATHS1141, PHYS1131, ELEC1111, and ENGG1000. So I have 2 questions:

1. Am I allowed any clashes? ELEC1111 and ENGG1000 overlap by 1 hour and there is only 1 lecture time slot.

2. When I called the staff at UNSW they said I should should do MATHS1141, PHYS1131, ELEC1111, and ELEC2141 (for which ELEC1111 is a prerequisite). So i'll have to do ENGG1000 next semester. Is this ok?

Thanks everyone

Wait for Squar3 or D94 or someone for a better answer.

From me:

If the clash between ELEC1111 and ENGG1000 is inevitable, then the first thing to identify is if the clash is permitted. If it is, you can compromise if you're daring but otherwise avoid it. If it's not however, avoid it altogether.

I don't believe there's a problem with doing ENGG1000 in second semester, however what might be a problem is having the prerequisite done simultaneously. For this, you'd want to look at info on the course itself (maybe try a course handbook) and figure out why it's a prerequisite and then decide if their suggestion is feasible.

  • MATH1131 OR MATH1141
  • PHYS1131
  • ELEC1112
  • ELEC2141

^^Also anomalousdecay, he knows a LOT about this.

For Q2: Many people have said it's fine to do Elec1112 and 2141 together, you can basically overlook that pre-requisite. According to the people who ran Elec1112 last year, it "is an important pre-requisite for ELEC2134 Circuits and Signals and a less critical pre-requisite for ELEC2141".

If your concern is about doing Engg1000 in semester 2 then you can just do it in year 2 sem1, tho I'm not 100% sure on this because the teacher at Info Day said it's fine but a 4th year BE ME student said otherwise, so maybe the former misheard my question.

I am doing ELEC2141 next sem and I'll be a 3rd year student and plan on doing COMP2121 in 4th year and people generally do it in 2nd year

doesn't really matter when you do it

Thanks everyone. Isn't ENGG1000 supposed to be a lot worse in semester 2 though? And ELEC1112 isnt running so I have to do ELEC1111 instead.

oh that's right, prof epps is cancelling it so you'd need to do:
  • MATH1131 OR MATH1141
  • PHYS1131
  • ELEC1111
  • ELEC2141

and you can leave ENGG1k to 2nd semester or 2nd year up to you

Who told you that?
epps informally mentioned it in this years 1112 lecture

he said many students are opting out to do 1111 even elec majors and there isn't a significant difference between the courses

If Elec1112 is cancelled, does anyone know when most electrical engineers are doing elec1111, sem 1 or sem 2? I'm trying to "stay with same cohort" if that makes sense?

sem 1

but staying with the same cohort is both good and bad like you can stick with your friends but will have less variety of friends because you aren't exposed to other years and what not but semester 1 would be ideal so you don't delay other courses

There are only 30 spots left in ELEC1111, there is no way UNSW would structure their times such that only a select number of first year students can do it in sem 1. no way.

maybe they'll open up more spots? they did that for MMAN2100 and MTRN2500 last year

They would need to open up 200 more spots, not a straightforward task i.e. find a new lecture theatre, find more space for tutorials

Only about 120 students did ELEC1112 when I did it. Most students do 1111 in semester 2 (about 600 or so).

Not sure what is going on with ELEC1112 from sem 1, although you do learn a few more things in it compared to ELEC1111 in sem 2.

If you are studying BE ME, you are advised to do MATH11X1, PHYS1131, ELEC111X and ELEC2141 in your first semester of first year.

If you do ELEC2141 in second year, it might make things a bit harder for you as you will have to take up a minor course or general education course to ensure that you complete 4 courses in second semester of first year.

That's because ELEC1111 is core for mech, renewable and pv students. Elec students should really do 1112 as it benefits them more, but many take the easy way out and it's not even regulated by the school of elec.

It's because all the extra stuff learnt in 1112 is applied again in 2134 any way.
