Out of curiousity, are you allowed to do more than the eight units/subjects in one year? Not that i'm planning to first year cos it would be too much work, but just say you needed to fit an extra subject in, do they give you permission? is there a maximum credit points not just a minimum?

They will not give you permission to do more than 14 credit points in any given semester in your first semester, first year. You can however apply to get permission to do do more than 14 credit points, on the basis of how it fits into your program and your GPA. Typically having to be greater than 3 out of 4.

Pretty much :)
They also check if your proposed timetable still gives you free time for other activities other than study. If you have plenty of free time your chances are increased in getting permission.

i got an offer into BIT... i'm not sure if i'm going to accept it yet cuz i'm already a student at usyd and i'm weighing up my options!! i hope to transfer into the combined BIT and BBA after first semester. here are my proposed classes:

first semester:
COMP115
MATH130
ACCG105
MKTG101

second semester:
COMP114
COMP125
MATH135
ECON111

the online macq handbook didn't give much details on first year units so i assumed the rest were electives.. am i right?

Hi jlh, it's good that you want to change to the double degree program. This is what i would do in your case.

Semester 1
MATH130
COMP115
MKTG101
ACST101

Obtain a GPA of at least 2.5 here and transfer to the BBA/BIT program.
2.5 is about 2 Credits, 2 Passes.

Semester 2
COMP125
COMP114
MATH135
ACCG105

I was also in a computing only degree and only decided to change to the double degree program end of last year. Doing MKTG101 right now at summer, and will be doing whatever you'll probably do this year also (with the exception of all the 100 level computing and maths units).

Note also that ACCG105 is only offered in the second semester.

Hey majesty can you tell us a bit more about summer school? like how long it goes for, when it begins and how many hours etc to do one subject? I'm not worried about this summer cos i'm only first year, but in later years it may be of use..

It depends on the subjects, but you can find some information here.

http://www.coe.mq.edu.au/ssbknew.html

Mine only went for 5 days, MKTG101 and im sitting the final examination on Thursday.

Note that the major disadvantage of doing summer school is that it's not covered under HECS :( MKTG put me back by $1350 upfront.

The only core unit for 100 level in the BIT is.

COMP115 - Introduction To Computer Science
COMP125 - Fundamentals Of Computer Science Pre-requisite: COMP115
COMP114 - Introduction To Information Systems
MATH135 - Mathematics IA Pre-requisite: HSC Mark of 90 or above or MATH130

Note that for MATH135, if you didnt get band 6 for 2U Mathematics at high school you'll need to do MATh130 first like i did :)

Which basically means you make the other 12 credit points up with electives such as STAT170, this is basically one of those 'almost everyone does it' sorta subject. Or in flyin's case, STAT171 ;)
