As Huratio said it does largely depend on the subject. I am aware that some subjects don't have a class participation mark per se, but if you fail to attend a benchmarked number of classes you will automatically fail the subject.

To clarify Huratio and RoadCone....

Correct.

Dependent on the subject, you will get either

(a) Class Participation
(b) You must attend 80% of tutorials OR YOU FAIL!
(c) A combination of A and B

OR

(d) No attendance or class participation requirements.

If class participation is awarded but no attendance rate is required, you should attend as many tuts as possible. It is easy to get a distinction plus grade in this component.

at unsw they do, but they don't ccount how much times you come to class [unless its REALLY Extreme absences] coz the classes r like really small, so it's pretty easy to notice; they don't keep a record though

class participation is more like how much you contribute in class and stuff - it's 20% for us :S :S

As far as I know - generally, law does NOT.

I'm in 3rd year Law/Arts UTS at the moment and I've only ever had class participation marked in Law of Torts, and Federal Constitutional Law.

They were worth roughly 20% each.

Law of Torts was in class participation of answering questions etc.

Federal Constitutional Law was a combination of in class participation and posting in the online discussion board.
