You could just fill the form, give that and your cash to the Union desk. They'll process everything, and the society people will contact you.

[the majority of] clubs and societies are just a money scamming scheme for the fat cats organising said club/society, and they'll hold like one meeting a year with a free bbq or some shit.

Don't waste your time joining the debating society. I don't mean to sound like an absolute nerd (who am I kidding :p ) but they don't seem to take debating as seriously as I expected. It's just another party.

Seeing as you're a fellow law student, I'd suggest you join the law society... i am a satisfied customer so far :) lol

btw, what's your major for comm?

and who are you to judge, for someone who didn't go to easters? :mad1:

UTS DebSoc is very much a people-oriented society. there will be partying to satisfy the masses of course, but debating takes centre-stage always.

UTS will be organising Australs (Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships) this year so i urge everyone to sign up and try out.

the website for UTS Debating is:

you'd probably be surprised at the party aspect of debating at all unis, it's not just UTS fronting up for day 2 with shocking hangovers...intervarsity tournaments are just as much about socialising and drinking as competing for everyone involved, even the scary USyd teams...UNSW for example have a rep as 'masters of the dancefloor' which I'm happy to back up after a night dancing with their contingent, and ANU/ADFA and UQ staged scavenger hunts including such challenges as inserting obscure phrases into speeches (which i can't remember due to my drunkenness while discussing this with an ANU debater, and my failure to convince the ADFA guy i was flirting with that he should break the rules and let me have his copy of the document).

And debating's not just another party, it's THE party where suddenly debaters are excessively cool...and lets face it, that's an achievement in itself:p But we really do take the debating side of things seriously, it's just that we like to have a little fun along the way.

The very fact that I wasn't given the information when I signed up for the debating society on O-day and left in the dark about subsequent trials and easters was the very reason I couldn't and therefore didn't go to easters. Therefore, I think I have every right to voice my opinion.

And I'd rather not volunteer for menial tasks for Australs when my primary motive for joining DebSoc was to continue debating as I have done so for the past 7 yrs. So pardon me for not sharing your enthusiasm.

i'm not gonna argue with you (done enuf arguing for three days)... but srsly though, i wasn't given any info. after o-week i went to the union page, found the link to debsoc page, then browsed to the debsoc msn groups page http://groups.msn.com/utsdebatingsociety/

and if you prefer debating at Australs that's cool, but remember this: for a tournament to happen the host university and its people have the invest time, effort and money into it. Australs cannot happen spontaneously without the efforts of DebSoc members. without volunteers doing those "menial tasks" as you call it, there will be no debating/partying/socialising for anyone. if you're just gonna reap the rewards without helping out in some way, then that's pretty damn selfish.

tenax, we only get what we give.
