i apologise if this pisses anyone off, but...
i am not actually doing the hsc.
yes i am the source of all evil, i am a queenslander.
But tomorrow i have the second half of my QCS test, so i sympathise... but admit on behalf of all queenslanders that we get it easy.

QCS may suck. HSC sucks worse.

:) best of luck, deepest sympathies.

As far as I know, the VCE is fairly similar to the HSC (but languages get bonus scaling points or something like that).

The QCS is waaaaay easier than the HSC. =P And it almost completely depends on what school you go to as well (almost).

having moved down from queensland to NSW this year

to do the HSC, i have to say we get it a lot easier up there.

but we (the queenslanders) come out smarter.

and better looking.

much better looking.

and your system of scaling and assessment is nothing compared

to ours.

and we won the origin.

The QLD education system awards an Overall Position score (OP) instead of UAIs. They range from 1 to 25, where an OP 1 is equivalent to a UAI of 99.00, an OP 6 is equivalent to a UAI of 90.00 and an OP 25 is equivalent to a UAI of 30.00 (the full conversion table is on page 88 of the UAC guide).

Essentially, all the students at each school undertake a 'general knowledge' exam - schools are ranked according to the results of the school on this exam, and each school is assigned certain OPs which can then be awarded to students on the basis of their school assessment ranking. I have a friend who went to Brisbane Grammar (I think? Something like that) last year. He had around 250 students in his year, and the school was awarded 45 OP 1s to give out, meaning that the top 45 students from that school all received an OP 1 (or UAI of 99.00).

That's a fairly crude explanation, but you should be able to see my point.

Hmmm... yeah, I think I understood what you said.

But I still don't quite understand what you meant by "And it almost completely depends on what school you go to as well (almost)." How does it? Are you saying that you will do better on your QCS, or achieve a better result, depending on the school you attend?

If you go to a 'less competitive' school, where only one or two OP 1s are awarded, you're going to need to be ranked first or second in your year to get one.

If you go to one of the top schools (such as Brisbane Grammar, still not sure if that's the actual name, anyway) you have a much greater chance of raking in a fairly good OP even if you only have an average ranking.

I suppose the result doesn't necessarily depend on the school you attend, but the school certainly biases it somewhat.

Hmmm... interesting.

I guess in a way it works the same way over here. I mean, look at James Ruse.

I think that's what you meant, otherwise I've completely misunderstood what you just said, and in that case I apologize. LOL.

Except that over here it's only assessment marks, not actual UAIs.
