Hi all,

Feel free to discuss any questions/answers to the 2014 Advanced BOS Trial in this thread! Were there any questions you couldn't get out? Any questions in particular that you liked/disliked?

I'll answer any questions you have about the paper in general, but I'll let the users discuss solutions in here. Myself and Trebla will give hints if students have difficulty with any problems =)

Official solutions will be posted in this thread some time next week.

The link to the exam is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/m012dlpuzuez50r/2014 BOS Trial Mathematics Advanced.pdf?dl=0

Curious, I'd like to see somebody get the last question out.

Any of the Extension students want to give it a crack?

How would the overall difficulty of this paper rank against the typical Question 16 of the HSC exam?

On the day, it was one of the easiest questions. I've seen harder HSC questions particularly before the MC format.

Another way you could do the last question I guess:

All triangular numbers can be written in the form or

in the second form to arrive at

Therefore by letting n = 2011, we deduce that 2011x2012x2013x2014+1 must be a perfect square. A little bit crude - what were you looking for Carrotsticks?

don't think Carret would be looking for that sort of solution in a 2U paper... idk just my opinion.

Still pissed about not getting the probability question on the day. Would be surprised if I got 20. Is this the right answer?

Very well done.

I do.

To some degree because of the relevant content, but mostly so then you can be exposed to some of the techniques in there that you most likely would never have encountered before. Also, there are a lot of traps there for silly errors so it's best to be made aware of them now before you actually do the HSC.

Haha obviously not.

On the phone atm but when I am at a computer, I'll upload my intended solution.
