I know this is a very silly question but
how is cos40+cos50/cos50 =2 I am getting 1 for some reason

cos40 + cos50/cos50 is not equal to 2. Type it in a calculator and you get 1.766...

Either the question is wrong or you typed something wrong.

Please post the question, coz I don't get you.
Maybe you wrote the question wrong?

2cos^2(40) + 2cos^2(50) = 2
cos^2 (40) + cos^2 (50) = 1
