Hey just wondering, i've had a bit of conflict between a number of my textbooks on what the formula for the values is in Simps rule? Is it FOTE or TOFE ? As in 4 odd 2 Even or the other way around?

good way to remmember it is "TODD" meaning T(wo)ODD

If you forget in the test just do it the simple way

Isn't it... four odd two even?

Wait... what are you guys talking about?

I think it's four odd two even, unless you guys are talking about something else.

No two odd four even as long as you take the first interval to be y1 instead of y0

See i told you it was controversial. My teacher said it was TOFE. 2 Odd four even, but in the Excel "50 Tips" book it says FOTE. 4 Odd 2 Even.
Bloody oath.

i just checked in two books and one says to use two odd while the other one says to use 2 evens..........grrr.....it depends on whether you take y0 or y1

Hmmm...

I think it would be wise to remember one of those and just stick to it then.

I'm sticking to the y0 one, it's the one I've known all along anyway. Until today... Hehe :D

Does the y1 one work too? Same answer and all?

It only works on 3 function values though
Do we actually need to know that weird one? I've never used it, just saw it in EXCEL.

the simple one takes a long time on 5 function values while the weird one is worth learning because then you can do those 5 function ones faster and with less opportunity for simple mistakes

Peeps, the Simpson's Rule is easy. Taking y0 as your first function:

h/3 [(first function + last function) + 4(all even values) + 2(all odd values)]

Thats it. Use nothing else.

i think the other ones easier

a+b/6 (f(A) + 4f(a+b/2) + f(B))

then if u need to tack an extra one on the end its jsut

a+b/2 (f(A) + f(B))
