Hey all,

Just wondering who is lurking on the boards and attends this uni. I've deferred my place for UoM until 2006 cause I'm from the country and have to save up.
My older sis attends Melb, loves it and is in her honours year.

So...who are you and what are you doing?

- Kate

Btw, my course is self explanatory in my sig. :)

Hey!!! I'm a "prospective Uni of Mel'ber"!!! They've got such an impressive faculty of medicine..I'd love to be working in the Bionic Ear Institute~the establishment of the inventor of the Bionic Ear (or cochlear implants) Professor Graeme Clark himself but as well as other hospitals the students get to learn their stuff from like the Royal Melb hospital..etc

anyways, it'll be a miracle if I'm going to Melb for uni next year!

I'm a first-year student, studying Media & Communications (with a second major in Linguistics) and the Diploma of Modern Languages in French.

Yay, Melb. Uni. people! :D

Hooray! Hi Kayti. My name is Katie as well...just spelt differently.
I am assuming that you were educated in Victoria (I'm from the border of Vic and NSW so I did my HSC not VCE). May I ask what school?
How are you enjoying UoM and you're degree? Media and Comm is a competitive little one to get into at Melbourne.

Hi Latania!

Med at UoM is really good I hear. My sister's bf did his Med degree there and finished about 3 years ago. He is now an anathesia registrar or something rather.
UoM is not to mention, one of the most, no I would say most beautiful university I've seen. Expect, the Med building is ugly! It's directly across the road from Royal Melb Hospital, their Gene Technology Centre (in affliation with my sis's old school University High) and really close to Royal Childrens Hospital...where my sister is a regular patient! Oh, and close to Women's Hospital.

I can't wait to move down there.

Hi Katie. My name isn't actually "Kayti", that's just my nick, hehe.

I was educated in Victoria - at The MacRobertson Girls' High School. I finished in 2004.

I'm finding the UoM quite good. It has a bit of a reputation for being elitist and what have you, but hey, I went to MacRob. for four years, so I'm used to that kind of academic snobbery! :p I'm finding the people quite nice - not as friendly as people at say, Monash (where a lot of my friends go), but friendly all the same. My only gripe is having to wake up sooo early to catch the train in order to make those 9.00am lectures! I live right around the corner from Monash Clayton so it would've made more sense to go there, but I wanted to be a "Melbourne Uni" girl (and Monash doesn't offer the same Media & Communications stream). You'll find a lot of people around who wanted to go to Melbourne simply for the prestige factor.

My course is alright. First-year subjects are always a bit of a drainer because you don't get to learn about much in-depth (in the humanities subjects anyway) - everything is an "introduction" for specialisation in years two and three. The lecturers try to give you a taste of every single aspect of the course so that you have a wide general idea of what the course entails. But it's not too bad. I'm doing Media & Communications, English, Linguistics and French, and I enjoy all of those so I can't complain.

What's your course? What are you doing while you defer for the year? Why did you choose the UoM? Where are you living whilst in Victoria? You can give me the run-down on yourself now. :p

Ahh! A MacRob girl. My sister tried to go there, but got University High instead. Lol. Well, I am not actually in Victoria, I am in New South Wales by only about 4km. I am one of those border challenged individuals. I live in Albury...commonly known as Albury Wodonga but any affliation with the latter town is denied, seeing as it is one grand hole.

I went to Albury High. Which is the largest comprehensive high school in my town, and we are the only state high school in Alburu to have blazers for everyday wear...not that it is important. Hehehe. When I go down to UoM, I'll either be in college or living in a terrace that my sister currently lives in cause next year she is moving in iwth her boyfriend. Which will mean I will move in with a fellow Alburnian. If that falls through I will be going into college (hopefully Queens, St Mary's or Newman...I don't really like the 'Toffy' atmosphere of Trinity or Ormond...and my sister knows the Dean of Queens and he's really nice).

My course is Bach Creative Arts (at least, that's what I've deferred from). However I am not sure I will be going through with it. I am applying for Victorian College of the Arts and NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts, Sydney) for Bach Dramatic Arts (Technical Production). If I get into either of those, I will be giving UoM the kick.

Anyways, I chose UoM cause of it's repuation of having the best or rather most respected 'Arts' courses in Australia, what with their reletively high cut off. Also my sister has been there since 2001, she is doing BMus (Performance) but started off doing a BA/BMus. She loves it and the atmosphere. It's a little more 'Toffy' (there is that word again!) as you said, in comparison with Monash, but I think that would be better for me, that and the fact that I'm not a huge fan of Monash...its' a great uni, fantastic uni, it's just too far out of town for me.

As for what I am doing this year, my grand plan to try and gain independent status (which means earning $17 121 in 18months [I.e. AS IF!]) is falling through not having permanment employment. I am a waitress by trade. It is really depressing, working your arse off in the last two years of school to become a waitress for a year. You see kids who are sent off from here to cities for uni cause their parents can afford it. It feels rather unfair, my parnets are both teachers, but the government stil says we earn too much. My parent can't afford to support two girls living away from home. Cause living away from home, and doing uni costs a lot for country kids, and though I have a uni here in Albury, two actually, I want to go to a prestigious uni (one that actually has a standing in Australia and the world)...and that's certainly not what we have here in Albury.

So yeah. That's me. It's good to see you here on the boards. Hope to see you continue to post.

Helloo I just found this forum.
I've just started at Melbourne Uni doing Arts and a Diploma of Creative Arts, with another Creative Arts subject as my Arts subject... if that makes any sense. So I'm doing Japanese, Visual Culture and Modernity & Post-Modernity (staying away from Arts as much as possible, heh.). I'm really loving it, and I'm thinking about transferring to BCA next year!. I'm having trouble deciding what other Arts subjects to take other than Jap, and the only ones that appeal to me are the CA ones, lol. I really like the department, because it's small it's easy to get to know people and everyone's really cool, much friendlier than the Ars people, and the subjects look really interesting (and the ones I'm taking, are).

A friend of mine is at the VCA and I've heard that it's FANTASTIC, so here's to hoping that you get in there... although it is full on and will make you an even poorer uni student than the usual poor uni student :)

Hey Fell. So you're enjoying your BA Dip CA? That's good to hear. I know very little about the Creative Arts department, and that's what my degree is next year! A BCA!

Can I ask what your friend is doing at VCA? I want to do Production...well, it is my 'dream'.

Heyyy, first post, new member etc. etc. Hello! :)
I'm a prospective Melb Uni kid, hoping to get into Arts or Arts/Law (not sure which is preferable, also depends on the score of course) for 2006 and defer for a year to work, hopefully get independence and go travelling.
Courses.. I'd like to keep doing some Philosophy and Maths, and maybe some Politics and Sociology.
Also because we're rural (live about 3 hours from Melb), I'll probably be in college for the first year at least. My sister's at St Hildas, doing first year Med this year, she's drinking ALL the time and loving college and her lectures, so from what I've seen it seems like fun.

One more question: Were they straight out of school? Like did they finish the VCE in 2004/03? Or did they work for a bit...
yep she's straight out of school, finished last year.

Hello, everybody! :D Just bumped into this forum as well. Yeah, I'm a prospective student, and I expect I could get enough UAI to get me into the Bachelor of Arts, where I'll be planning to study Cinema. I once applied for the Film & TV program at VCA last July, but since August was filled with tons of assessment tasks, I couldn't complete the entire selection test, so I guess I've got to let it go. But Cinema would be just fine for me. Anyway, great to see you all.

Katie! I havent seen you on msn for ages, but then we're both living a very similar 'dream' this year in the taking the year off and working in Albury.

Im a deffered Melb Uni girl, Media & Communications, and im applying for St Mary's college.

The run down on me - Finished HSC in 2004, got into my course, was happy, decided to work for a year, am now slowly losing my personality to two jobs that suck in a bank and in a tax office.

Also, ive just sent in a letter to the editor of the Education feature in the Border Mail about how hard it is for students to get assistance. Hopefully it will be published pretty soon.

Did anyone who goes to Melbourne Uni see the Queens Musical? My lord that was FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!

Hey erin!

God tell me about the job situation. How the hell did u land two such perfect jobs! I have been struggling somewhat. I've done green corps, waitressing, am working at Dick Smith at the moment...
It's so hard...and I've only earnt 11grand so far...6 to go for youth allowance. I'm trying to investigate other avenues...

Hahaha! I can't believe that you're applying for Mary's too. It's my first preference, well that's not true. I've been putting off sending away my application because I can't choose between Queen's or Mary's. I didn't see Queen's musical...pity that.
I'm also auditioning for VCA (School of Production).

Hopefully I'll see you out soon. :)
