You can hide this advertisement by registering.
I'm probably getting a new PC soon. I got most the parts figured out.

CPU: Intel i7 920
Mobo: GA-EX58-UD3R
GPU: Sapphire 5770?
PSU: 600-650w decent brand
RAM: 6gb ram kingston or similar

But im not sure about the gpu. its 1gb memory / 128bit. directX11 and stuff but is there a better gpu i can get for about $200-250. Any help is appreciated. D

Re: What gpu?

Hmm how much are you paying for the i7 920? I'd reccomend you wait to be honest, they went up for some reason. The current price for an i7 920 is considerably more then I paid for mine which was just after it came out.

BTW the ram is going to be tri-channel ddr3 right?

Re: What gpu?

What are you going to use your PC for? If it's mainly gaming, then you could probably drop your CPU down to an i5, drop down to 4GB RAM and get a better GPU. I'd go for a Radeon 5870 or GTX295.

Re: What gpu?

Just by convention, you don't use the GPU's manufacturer with the model number.
ie. Sapphire 5870 will confuse lots of people, whereas Radeon 5870 is the known brand/model name.
Anyway, you should at least get a GTX 285 with a nice cooling system for some hardcore overclocking.

@ brent, DDR3 is barely any better than DDR2

DDR2 SDRAM 200Mhz.

*drools*

Actually

DDR2 SDRAM 200MHz= 6400 MB/s
DDR3 SDRAM 200MHz= 12800 MB/s

Re: What gpu?

memory frequency/latency/channels have little to no impact on the pc's performance, unless you like running SuperPI a lot or some shit like that.

AFAIK no i7 compatible mobo supports DDR2, i know my EX58 doesn't. I was mainly asking if he was going to use tri channel.

Oh yes and make sure you buy a good fan/cooling system, the stock i7 cooler is absolutely horrible. My computer was randomly turning off, going rather slow and showing temps of around 70 degrees celsius in the bios straight after turning it on.

Umm...If it Supports DDR3, it SHOULD support DDR2. I think you have got your messages mixed up.

Nope, look it up aswell. It seems as if no i7 mother boards at the moment support ddr2. Wikipedia even claims that "The Core i7 supports only DDR3." on the ddr3 page, but dont know if thats good enough proof.

Just dug a lil deeper, its because the i7 processor connects directly to the memory, not the chipset (wtf, why?), and yadda yadda, i7 has DDR3 ram built in, yadda yadda.

So you're right.

But DDR3 RAM has become cheaper apparently.

Re: What gpu?

i7 uses QuickPath Interconnect technology and is designed for use with tri channel DDR3 ram. The main reason that i7 mobo's can't support DDR2 is because DDR2 ram is dual channel, and it needs to be tri channel.

As for gpu, if you going to be waiting a while anyway for the i7 920 price to drop you should wait until the Nvidia GTX300 series is released and make a decision then because they have the potential to be awesome cards.
