24 Aug 2008, 5:40 PM ![]() | Name of Poem: Summer Rain What is the poem about? CONTENT -The person's stuckk in traffic and he decides to see what else goes on in the worl around him, whilst he does the same thing over and over again each day. He see's life outside his continuous routine and takes it in. Does any of the content relate to his life? CONTEXT (provide quotes) -His lifestyle would have had a routine, therefore a car accident to him and perhaps others seemed like the end of the world, as there routine was broken. How does the TITLE fit the poem? -At first we think the poem will talk about refreshing summer rain. However, it then shocks the responder as he starts talking about humid, dusty heat. At the end there is then a light, cool and refreshing rain. What are the main ideas/issues? THEMES -He's saying that when life brings you down and everything comes to a holt, that you should just sit back or go out and see what else there is and what life can bring. What descriptions are used? IMAGERY (provide quotes) -"Clutter on the highway like abacus beads" imagining cluttered cars banked up and only moving back and forward. -"Steam rising from ovens and showers" imagine steam from the windows. What TECHNIQUES are used? (provide quotes) -Onomateopoea "Shadows SLAP at edge of grass" -Personification "Sunlight Scrawls" -Similes "Like mist accross the swamplands" -Free Verse Poem -Metaphors "Tattered edges of the afternoon" What is the effect of each technique on the responder? What effect is created? -He uses techniques such as imagery, metaphors, personification, similes etc as a way of making the poem seem more realistic and so the responder can imagine as well as relate it to their own experiences. Using similes helps us to compare it to other things and see how it was like. Hope this helps! |
