No, I didn't expect I'd get in the top 20, although I knew I did better in physics than chemistry.

I know two in your year went to Canberra, because they organised after school tuition leading up to the exams.

Letters still may arrive early next week because mine was only sent on the 19th and it arrived during period 5 on Friday.

No thanks, I think I'll just take the money. It costs $1000 to go to the training program, a further $1500 if you are in the top 8 and go to the Asian Olympiad, and $2000 to go to the International Olympiad!

    Congrats falcon07!

    Hmm I probably got 8 + 4 + 8 + 3 + 8 = 31 out of 50. Hope that's enough.
The circuit question was a giveaway few marks, I think.

Ask your school if they'd subsidise you. ^^

Ougoah- you were the guy from Fort St on AoPS, right?

Yeah... get your school to pitch in... and ask Rotary... they're always good with sponsoring these things ... it's such a great opportunity

    Re: Olympiads

I think there's only one physics invite. As far as I know.

In my year (Yr 10) there are two people, one bio, one chem. I don't know about the rest of year 11, though.

    They don't really know/care.

And this year 9 guy got into chem. But I kind of expected him to get into something, cos he's really good.

    Re: Olympiads

eesh, do you guys have to accelerate in either bio/chem/physics before year 11, to trial for the olympiads?

The emotional/rational dichotomy approximates the folk distinction between "heart" and "head"; knowing something is right "in your heart" is a different order of conviction than thinking so with your rational mind.

    Re: Olympiads

He did 4 olympiads. Very successfully. IPhO Gold. And was vice captain. =\

There are heaps of talented "freaky" people in other schools though. In the end there aren't that much more people in the camps, it seems.

There's after weekly after school training Feb-Aug, which is just hardcore crash coursing.

We generally can't accelerate anything except Ag, SD, and IPT. Not even maths.

At least you could accelerate in, something. I wish I accelerated in IPT in year 10 or something, just to get some units out of the way. And Cosmology sounds so interesting x.x

Oh, eww. Poor you. Now's too late anyway, right?

I thought you would've loved cosmo too. >>

Listen, I didn't even KNOW about acceleration till something like, last year. Very un-informed, wasn't I?

See, I just never could've accelerated, anyhow

    Re: Olympiads

You'd probably want to find a copy of the Halliday text to look through... or at least any first year text. Obviously it's good to go through stuff to some level of detail first or you'd be extremely overwhelmed.

Hey, I know most maths olympiad people don't frequent this forum (apart from a few) but if anyone gets an invitation to School of Excellence... post here. They're meant to be out around now.
