Rank because remember some schools set harder assessments than others but then the BOSTES scales the marks higher in order to balance the differences in marks between students (if you get what I mean)

Marks are more important than ranks, provided the assessments are consistent with HSC standards.

Let's say you're 3rd out of 50. Sounds good right? You're only 1 rank from 2nd, and 2 ranks from 1st! But now let's look at your marks. 1st and 2nd have marks in the 90s, but your mark is in the 70s, even though you are 3rd. Do you really think you are as good or close to 2nd? Not really. Your rank can mask the true nature of your abilities. Marks determine ranks, ranks do not determine marks.

But you need to recognise that your assessments may not be of HSC standards. If they are lower, then you really need to get a sense of perspective as to what you really know and understand. If they are higher, and if you are doing well, then you're in a great position.

Usually the school you go to might be an indicator if they are setting hard exams.

In all honesty though getting a good rank is still good no matter the school as you do place yourself in a good spot comparative to everyone else. Although, if your worried about your ability, you should definitely try do past papers from different schools to see how you're comparing in marks.
