  • First half of the fifties , entertainment was dominated by radio and cinema
  • By the end of the decade , TV was the most dominant form of entertainment
Music
· Rock and roll
· Popular Australian radio show dominated by American music
· Rock n roll music from US helped to develop a different culture in Australia.
· Teenagers started to challenge the conservative lifestyle
· Social developments saw a drop in church attendance

Home appliances
· Inventions – refrigerators and transistor radio
· Luxuries in previous decade became necessities , washing machines , dryers, sewing machines etc
· Home appliances helped promote a feeling of national affluence of prosperity.

Fashion
· As American films and music came to Australia, so did the desire to copy the American way of life
· Men started wearing clothes like James Dean
· Hair is greased and sideburns popular
· Women copied Sandra Dee and Marilyn Monroe.

  • Sport 1956- Melbourne Olympics
  • Social and cultural features
  • Introduction of television in 1956 saw Australia become well acquainted with the American culture.
  • 75 % of movies coming into Australia were American

  • The US had the technology to produce much more and could swamp the market
