hsc/uai

Hey, I'm in year 12 now but I've done my hsc for maths ext. 1 in 2002 and I got in the low 90's which was the highest in my school.
I want to repeat and get higher but I'm unsure if my school will affect my mark- ie my school will pull me down and the highest mark I can get is what I got. Can you give me any info or advice?:confused:

I was in a similar situation to you. In 2001 I did the HSC for maths and maths ext 1 and scored HSC marks of 97 and 95 respectively.

In 2002, i completed my other subjects and thought about repeating 3 unit but didn't, it isn't really worth it, better to spend time in other subjects. Also I could spend more time in 4 unit, ended up getting 92 for that as a HSC mark.

If u want to repeat, as long as u are ranked first then u won't be affected by your school's performance in the HSC exam. But if u repeat your latest attempt will be included in the calculation of your UAI.

Thanks for the advice, ultimate. :)
I think I'll concentrate on my other subjects first and if I'm doing the best that I can in them, then I might repeat my ext 1, because I've only got 8 more units to complete. ;)

Maths Ext 1: 95/100 (2001) band E4
Maths Ext 2: 91/100 band E4

IPT: 88/100 Band 5 (didn't count in calc of UAI)

You can't use prelim marks, and I don't think you should use marks at all really. Percentiles are rather easier to estimate. After all, when you estimate you say to yourself "I know I'm not at the top (for most of us...), but I think I'm in this level of the group, I think this corresponds to such-and-such percentile. putting marks in is adding another source of error because you don't know what the mark distribution was like inthe course.

Estimating using percentiles I got within .05 of my UAI, happily the error was in the right direction :D.

I disagree with Ultimate actually. I was accelerated in maths and physics in 2001. Got 47 in 3u maths and 95 in 2u maths. Decided the 3u mark was crap and redid it with 4u maths in 2002. Ended up with 97 for a 3u mark which was definitely better. 4u maths has 3u included in it, so if you're doing 4u you may as well do 3u too because you will sure as hell do better in 3u if your a 4u student.

But in 2001, you had the advantage of the "bonus scaling" so a mark of 94 in 3 unit for 2001 (if u do 4 unit) would become a scaled mark of 95.5 or something, whereas a mark of 97 in 2002 in 3 unit would be scaled to something like 94-95, so the difference in terms of scaled marks was very marginal.

This was the primary reason I didn't repeat because I figured there was nor real gain in terms of scaled marks.
