how do you simplify

just simplified to make it easier

ln = log base e, NEVER anything else.

Recall that ln (x/y) = (ln x) - (ln y)

and that ln (x^y) = y*(ln x) and your question is doable :).

seems like it..

2lnx = lnx + lnx = ln(x<sup>2</sup>)

similarly

0.5 ln (y) = ln(y<sup>0.5</sup>)
0.5 ln (y) = ln(squareroot(y));

hence, 2lnx - 1/2 ln(y) = ln(x<sup>2</sup>/y<sup>0.5</sup>)
