volumes ::

in the HSC, do you have to specifically say things like:

"consider a cylindrical shell, with thickness /\V " blah
and use the sigma sign?

Just wondering..

oh yeah and how come many people say 4unit paper is easier than 3unit? I have done the past ones and 3unit imho is easier..

Isn't that a delta symbol? :p You can simply write it as 'dv' rather than '/\V', which fits in much more nicely when you integrate over the shells.

They have asked a question where you had to go through the whole process of the dv dx stuff. all the way from first principles. it was the only way you could answer it, because they asked you to explain/prove the result...
it's in one of the earlier 4unit papers, like 1990/1991.
something like dv=f(x)dx and you had to say why that was the case.

I always write a couple of preliminary lines whenever I start a volumes question. For example with a standard cylindrical shells question I would show:

A(x) = 2.pi.x deltax
deltav = 2.pi.x.f(x) deltax

which I think should be sufficient.
