    Re: Information on Accommodation

    Hey,

I know everyone is looking at signing up for accomdation in the next few months.
Anyone who is not a nerd is welcome at Burgmann.

Its the best college going around. The reasons why:
    1. Johns: Full of homosexual males
    2. Fenner: Too far away from anything
    3. Burton and Garran (B&G): Way to big
    4. Bruce: you get what you pay for
    5. Ursula: Only weird looking people go there (if you look weird thats the college for you)
    6. Toad Hall: No-one knows much about it as no-one knows where it is.
    7. Burgmann: full of intellectuals, sporting people and an awesome community.
No more bullshit writing (a.k.a English) yay!!

Same as most buildings really isn't it? Named after people that seemed important at the time? Like Bruce for the Prime Minister etc. And Johns and Ursies are linked to religous orders which have their own stories and links...

    Re: Information on Accommodation

I'm considering Fenner but from some stuff i've been reading it seems as if it's mostly older students who stay there not the 'straight out of high school' types... is this thought in any way accurate?

    Re: Information on Accommodation

    Fenner is an... interesting choice.

The high density of internationals means you have a LOT of people keeping to themselves and not participating/socialising. The distance from the ANU campus, the pubs/clubs, and other colleges also further increases the antisocial nature of the college.

I suppose if you're interested purely in study it'd be ok.

    Re: Information on Accommodation

    id have to agree....
if your interested in doing anything on campus, playing college sport, having a decent soical life with good college parties fenner simply isnt the place u want to be. I only know one person who was at fenner.... they stayed there for a semester then got out. it was a good choice. I went on a tour of fenner once and the guy said if ur interested in having a college atmosphere, with college pride and a big social scene dont go there. There are also practical disadvantages as mentioned before. Fenner, although sometime claiming to be on campus, is actually a fair way away... u sure wouldnt want to be walking it every day anyway. its also distant from the nightlife scene, plus civic where all the shops are. As you can see i dont hold fenner very highly in regard to ANU colleges, and this is pretty much indicitive of everybody ive talked to about it. Alhtough it does have ppl living there, so it must have something going for it, i just cant work out what it is.....

    Re: Information on Accommodation

Thanks for the info. Fenner probably isn't going to be the best place I know it's not *that* far from everything but it would be good to live on the campus itself. Now i just have to decide if I feel like cooking for myself...
    Here's some rumours/theories that I have heard:

    1. At the catered residencies dinner starts at around 5:30 - that is way too early for me, I'm used to eating at 7:30 or so
    2. You can't go out to dinner at the catered places as all your meals are already paid for
    3. Catered meals suck
    4. At a self catered place you spend all you time cooking

Can anyone justify any of these rumours?

That's true at Bruce, but dinner ends at 7:00.

You pay for 21 meals, but nothing is stopping you from going out.
    3. Catered meals suck
They aren't great, but they aren't bad either. Some people cry alot about the food but it's ok, sometimes good and you get lots of it (at Bruce at least).

    Re: Information on Accommodation

    1. Before college i was eating dinner about 8 at night. Dinner at johns starts at 6, ends at 7, but ppl are still in the dining hall till minimum of 7:15. Bottom line is that u'll probably have to eat earlier than you did, but u get used to it. By a few weeks in i was getting hungry aroun 5:45, its just a matter of habit.

    2. Yeh true you pay for all your meals, but ppl go out all the time to eat. Its a small sacrifice in the scheme of things. Also, at least at johns, what u pay for includes all the formal dinners with free, yes free, alcohol and some generally decent food.

    3. Catered food = not brilliant. But its mostly edible. I have found a soft spot in my heart for fish friday. (very much kidding). At least at johns if u dont like it, there is always pizza making facilities, the salad bar, u can buy something at the 'Tav'(ern). It would be a shame if u knocked back the awesome times catered colleges provide just because the food isnt 5 star.

    4. Never lived in a non-catered place so dont really know. But i guess logic says the time u would spend cooking every day, u could be doing other things.

    Hope this helps out

    Re: Information on Accommodation

    hi all

can someone tell me how far fenner is from anu? is it really 20 minutes? a 20 minute walk is pretty damn far. if i was to walk, will i be walking through a residential area? shops? or is it located near the city centre? alot of ppl travel that path? ie. will it be safe to walk there at night like 9pm?
    thanks

    Re: Information on Accommodation

ive never actually done the walk between anu and fenner but, ive done it by car... id reckon walking it to the front edge of anu you'd have to allow yourself a minimum of 20mins .... i guess u'd be walking along throgh an area where there is a few shops, government agencies etc. prob best to check with someone from fenner... i think there might be a fenner bus which leaves in the morning to campus (?) again, someone else may be able to confirm this
sorry cant really help u that much with fenner stuff...

There are buses during the day and there is Brian's bus after hours. You can also use ANU security for transport once Brian's stops running (at around 10-11pm).

Hahahaaha... mate, this is college ur talking about, i know at johns all they give u is a bed, cupboards, shelving, sink, desk and a light. If u want a TV u gotta bring it urself.... though most, if not all, colleges have big ass TVs in their common room type things.

    Re: Information on Accommodation

the clear majority of ppl in college (in johns anyway) do not have TVs. Some do. the reception, as far as i know is all good...
Personally, at uni, TV isnt a big part of my life excepting major sporting events.... u just spend time doing other stuff, besides if there is a show that u really like, it should be on the student network so ur pretty set.
but if u really do want a TV some ppl do have one, so there is nothing really to hold u back....
