17 Nov 2009, 2:10 PM ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Law of Segregation and Independent Assortment i'm not sure what law of segregation is cuz i think i learnt it under a different name. but anyways in a nut-shell, both of them are just to assist in creating more variations within a speices. Independent Assortment is just to describe the chromosomes lining up in different alignments so that different arrangements of chromotids move into the gamete and the Law of Segregation is just to describe the chromosomes spittling into two different daughter cells. with both of them combined, they increase variablilty in offspring. and you have to also consider fertilisation as a random process, and crossing over as a form of introducing more variables into daughter cells.

Yesterday, 1:32 PM ![]() | Re: Law of Segregation and Independent Assortment Medel's 1st law : law of Segregation - alleles of a gene on a pair of homologous chromosomes segregates into different cells during meiosis one mendel's 2nd law : law of independent assortment - alleles of 2 different genes laying on 2 different pairs of homologous chromosomes separate independently of each other.

He suggested their was a dominant allele and a recessive allele for every characteristic... this disproved theory of blending characteristics. this then led him to form two laws... Law of segregation - Factors SEPARATED during gamete formation / first phase... and Law of independent assortment - at fertilization offspring received one factor from each parent. i think that's right. meh that's what i remember anyway | |
