what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of using playdough to model addition of water to ethylene and dehydration of ethanol,

and modelling the ionization of strong and weak acids

p.s. doesn't have to be specific to playdough, could also refer to ball-stick models

much appreciated

uhh, basically u can see the molecules with models which otherwise would be too small. its a good representation of the thing. helps with understanding i guess.
umm disadvantages, not everything u see is entirely correct i guess. u cant see the intermolecular forces and all that stuff, :S

^^ basically what tim said. The advantages are that the models can easily show the shape of the molecule and what goes where in a reaction.

Other disadvantages would be that the models are not accurately scaled and you can't see the way electrons behave to assist with bonding.

it can help with understanding the concepts, but if you already understand them theres porbably not much point
