At high school level you should just forget about balancing metals or halides or super duper long molecules first, it'll just confuse you. Take this extremely simple example of the combustion of magnesium. Mg (s) + O2 (g) ----> MgO (s) All you need to do is count the atoms on their respective sides. Eg. There are 2 oxygen atoms on the LHS and 1 on the RHS. This can be rectified by placing a 2 in front of magnesium oxide. Mg (s) + O2 (g) ----> 2 MgO (s) Now if you count the number of magnesium atoms there are 1 on the LHS but 2 on the RHS so put a 2 in front of the Mg atom. 2 Mg (s) + O2 (g) ----> 2 MgO (s) This then balances the equation. This may seem extremely easy but it’s the fundamental steps in balancing and if you apply this to 'larger' reactions it should become easier.
