It seems like every second HSC student is doing EAS...i know that many people have valid reasons for applying but it seems that people (not neccesarily the ones who have posted) are really stretching the truth to rip off the system.
It's really discouraging to those who are giving it their best on their own merit.
What do you guys think? Do you know anyone who is ripping off EAS?

btw i am not completely ignorant! i know there are many who are genuinely disadvantaged and EAS is great in that respect.

Educational Access Scheme....

i think with that, you have to be aware that there are professionals who are juding it, hence those who who are ripping off the system wil be detected or consdiered not important enough to receive the benefit. I know they do a lot of bakc up checks etc, so if u happen to bsed, chances are u wont get thru. Here is a little stat for u, for every 3 pplz apply, onli 1 get it. however, you must keep in mind that they dont have a quantitiy benchmark, they have a quality one ie: they wont reject ur claim based on the number of pplz applied for this yr, they judge it on the acutal condition u have, so you shouldnt worry abt the number of candidates..

if you get the benefits then that means your long term illness or whatever the disadvnatage has serious affected ur studies,m but if they dont grant you the benfits, then it means that ur claim is not serious enough, be it that ur telling the truth or bsing.

I have applied and was encouraged to do so by my school for a medical condition that I've had since birth which has required frequent surgery - the last of which was just before the trials. I would have to agree with your cynicism eveajac, because during one of our whole year meetings, the head teacher pretty much did an ad for the scheme, encouraging anyone to "give it a go". Since then, people have been conjuring up all these weird and wonderful excuses to apply - it just doesn't seem right!

I am eligible for it cos of chronic migraine--but I didn't feel it has effected my education so I didn't bother. To me it would have been like rorting the system as evejac said.

most prob they wont get it.. cuz with servere stress issues the person would have gone to a specialist ie: a psychologist..... and u cant see a psycholgist as fast as a GP... ususalli the interval between the next appointment would be a wk or a few wks... and usaulli their applciaiton would include a report from psychologist to add weight instead of a GP's report....

educational access scheme is where people who have been affected because of certain conditions will get extra uai points, to give them a boost to where they belong, and what they would have got if they were not affected

I'd also like to add, for people obtaining it, alot no being bias, will be bludgers at school who THINK it's additional 5 UAI points, but they don't know you still have to be extremely competetive with your UAI results.

its onli extra 5 pts at syd... the system differs for other unis.. like with unsw, there dont tell u the amount they will give u.. they basicalli pick the top pplz.. and for law.. the mini requirement is lyk 98 i think..... which is abt 1 pt somethinb below the acutal uai... so as u can see..diff unis have diff system... the 5 pts onli apply for usyd.... in the case of law... if the uai is 99.6, then it will be 94.6..

most prob they wont... cuz if someone has servere stress... stress that is relaly affecting their studies.. they will def see a psychologist.. whereas those who are bsing prob wont even think to see one.. hence they have their GP report instead of a specialist's report... and if u think abt it... given that 1 in every 3 get it..... of course they would rather choose the one wiht the specialist report than the one with a GP report...

furthermore, if a person is truly suffering from it, there will be past histories.... such as: panic attacks during examines - witnessed by teachers, or a long term skool cousellor report - bakced up by cousellor report...

so althoguh there are heapz of pplz who are bsing, it doesnt mean they will get it, and dont worry if u have a genuine case because the number of candidates wont decide whether u get thru or not, its the severity of the case.

having said that, even if u do have a legit case... u might still get knocked bk because maybe they think ur case, though true, has not affected ur studies significantly, hence u might also not get it...

i think that is SO wrong. like, one of the girls in my year didnt turn up for a few of the exams coz she was 'stressed' so now she is appealing. what is wrong with that you ask? well lets just say the friday night before the exams she was out getting so drunk she was throwing up.
now take another girl in my year, her brother died a little while back, and it was a really high profile deal in this area, coz of the circumstances, there was a coronial enquiry and everything (without going into too many details, he was in hospital coz of car accident, and was in ICU for ages and stuff, and finally it looked like he was getting better, so they moved him into a private room, and he had a heart attack and died, and no-one knew for like 15 minutes after coz there was no supervision). anywayz, this girl gets 4 extra uai points, she had to get a letter from the coroner, another from the counsellor, another from the police, and more from teachers at our school to justify that her stress was reasonable, yet all this other girl has is a letter from her gp.

how is that fair?

so yeah, i get kinda pissed off at those rorting the system
