China signs nuclear safeguards agreement with Australia

China signs nuclear safeguards agreement with Australia
The World Today - Monday, 3 April , 2006 12:10:00
Reporter: Catherine McGrath

ELEANOR HALL: In Canberra the Prime Minister John Howard and Chinese Premier Wen Jiaboa have this morning signed a Nuclear Safeguards Agreement that will allow Australia to export uranium to China.

The Chinese leader met Prime Minister John Howard and Cabinet Ministers this morning prior to the signing ceremony.

And at a press conference later Mr Howard said that Australia's relationship with China has been completely transformed in the last 10 years and that he was very positive about the deal.

For his part the Chinese Premier hailed the talks as friendly and productive and emphasised that China hopes to reach a Free Trade Agreement with Australia within two years.

From Canberra, Chief Political Correspondent Catherine McGrath reports.

the bombs could go off at any time but if they do there is no point in worrying as survival is not very likely. other countries already have the means to create the bombs but does that mean we should suppply china with the opportunity to make more?

Maybe Australia should just get out of the whole thing and we can stay on our island of ignorance

China gets nuclear weapons, then signs a treaty a few years later. India doesn't sign the treaty and gets nuclear weapons a few years after the treaty was signed.

But somehow China are safe to sell shit to, but not India.

Oh yeah, India is a democracy, too.

Chinese leadership is too weak. They should just bomb taiwan already. What are nukes for if you can't put them to good use?

'These aussies', Sonic?

Because when the American President stands at the Orderve table with the Chinese President, he likes to know his nuclear stockpile is bigger than China's.

Weapons stockpile... The equivalent of a nations penis?

China has all the nukes it'll ever need anyway. Nothing to lose by selling them uranium.

I don't see why not...

We have an abundance of Uranium and it is a valuable resource in Australia... not only should we be exporting it; we should also be using it...
Nuclear energy is the future... Australia is barely able to provide electricity for itself at the moment.

So, why not?
It would make more jobs available, more research, analysts, scientists etc; will be in work.
It also is a good source of money for australia.

As has been stated; China has an abundance of nuclear weapons already...
This contract is beneficial to Australia, by providing Jobs for Australians... (it also would be very financially beneficial to Australia) and finally it would be beneficial to Australia to build an alliance with China. (since it is one of the "super powers" and China is our close neighbour)

anyone else find irony in having govt restrictions on trade discussed in relation to a country where one of the main criticisms is communism?
