AA also raises business costs because now they have to be worried about getting 0wned in the courts by other people. So even if they're choosing people completely on merit basis, if the racial/whatever else distribution goes away from some kind of parity, and the company is big enough they'll be put under mad scrutiny.

I've heard of cases where people applied to Microsoft, were unsuccessful, they just played 'the race card' when they didn't get selected and sued em. Dunno if they won or anything, but court cases cost lots of money...

Yeah Australia doesn't really have big affirmative action programs compared to somewhere like the US. In the US they have to game the whole system at the top unis to make sure there are more then a few blacks and hispanics.
