Re: World Cities

Economic Authority
Ø*Command centres for organising the world’s economy
Ø* Focuses for telecommunication technologies as well as infrastructure development.
Ø* Powerful centres of cultural authority
Ø* Focuses for the location of finances a specialized service firms.
Ø* The role of world cities as global command centres is often seen in terms of the distribution of:
oGlobal finance centres
oHeadquarters of TNC’s
Ø* The size of the stock market is a good indicator of the financial power of a city
Ø*The more globalised an economy, the greater the concentration of central command functions in global cities.

Cultural Authority
*New York – Theatre, music, fashion, cuisine, Broadway, Statue of Liberty, US Open, Universities, Super bowl
*Tokyo – Pokemon, cuisine, historical buildings, technology
*London – Broadway, cuisine, Wimbledon, historical buildings, the Queen, fashion

Ø* Another feature of globalization is the role of world cities as centres of cultural authority. This comes from their ability to generate and spread ideas and values, and influence cultural processes.
Ø* A ‘Global spectacle’ is the coverage of major events globally, courtesy of globalization of communications technology. Eg, Olympics.
Ø* Less emphasis is put on the dominant world cities for events such as thew Olympics.

HHope this helps
