Greek - quick help

Hey guys,
This really isn't in the right place, but if i put it where its mean to be no one would ever reply. I'm doing doing a greek assessment and im a bit stuck on something, maybe people with some good knowledge of english grammar could help me out.

In this sentence

"The Scythians, on picking up the bodies and learning they were (the bodies of) women, wondered"

I'm trying to figure out what the words in red (participles, kinda like adjectival verbs) are agreeing with ie what noun they are describing. Is 'picking up' describing 'the bodies' or is it describing 'the Scythians'?

Doctor: No. He'll be an engineer.

Re: Greek - quick help

I'm not sure whether this is what dd24 was saying but the participles agree with the Scythians:

οι Σκυθαι λαβοντες τους νεκρους και γνοντες των γυναικων ειναι, εθαυμασαν...

I assume the sentence continues with what they wondered about or at but I couldn't work out which so I assumed "wondered at".

Is that helpful? I didn't put in any diacritics because that's quite cumbersome to type.
