Need help with random acidic environment topics.

- What's the difference between amphiprotic and amphoteric?
- Equilibrium of carbon dioxide in water: CO2 + H2O <--> H2CO3. Using Le Chetalier's principle, explain what happens when sodium hydroxide is added.
- Potassium carbonate is basic. Justify.

Thanks

Thanks
1.) amphiprotic = something can either act as acid or base (either donate or accept protons)
amphiteric = something can either react with acid or base
try to remember....amphi = both, pro = proton, thus amphiprotic = eith donate or accept proton

2.) when NaOH is added, the carbonate acid will react with it ( with the OH- ) and produce water + carbonate (complete reaction). This will remove the carbonate acid in the equalibrium and hence the system will shift to the right to encounter this changes. And by adding NaOH, it will forces the equalibrium reaction into completion.

3.) K2CO3 reacts with water gives 2K+ ions and carbonate ion
potassium ions don't react with water (fat element in 1st column)
Carbonate ion reacts with water (conjugate base from weak base) gives bicarbonate ions and hydroxide which makes the solution basic.

Hope this helps!
