Esterification

You can hide this advertisement by registering.
Hi,

I recall when we were doing an esterification prac in class, we used a reflux column/condenser and then attached to the end of it a water-cooled condenser and we got condensed some stuff out of the mixture into a separate beaker (this was a long time after we heated the mixture). I forgot what that stuff we condensed was. Anyone have a clue?

Thanks

Re: Esterification

remember its an equilibrium so

alkanol + alkanoic acid <--> ester(alkyl alkanoate) + water

Re: Esterification

esters are extremely volatile and in the reaction due to the heat evaporate and attempt to leave the system. The condenser was condensing the ester so it returns back to the system below
