PET bottle is Polysomething or other its the plastic coke bottles etc its recyclable.

the way we did it was pretty dodgy, we just had a volume of soda water in a beaker on a hotplate and heated it until it was degassed, but we also had a beaker of previuosly degassed water and heated that for the same amount of time as a control to compensate for any soda water that was going to evaporate

whats all this shit about heating it, why wouldn't you just freeze it, that way all the CO2 comes out, and no water evapourates

Will the CO2 come out? There will always be bubbles formed in the ice.

It wont dissolve but as some of it comes out of solution the water above may already be frozen resulting in it being trapped and also weighed. And you might break the can/bottle due to the expansion of water.

But the gas isnt distributed evenly among the liquid by pouring a bit out you may tip out a lower % bit and get influenced results.

if the soln is cooled slowly then the bubbles trapped in the solid ice will be minimised...

and plus once you thawed it all the bubbles would come out of the ice, with only an amount proportional to how much CO₂ is in the atmosphere would redissolve (about .03% i think)

Good point, didnt think about thawing it. The amount redissolved will be equal to the controls so no noticeable effect will be noticied.

We just weighed a bottle of soda water with an empty PET bottle on the scale as well, then opened the bottle carefully, transerred the liquid to the PET bottle and shook it up, left it for a few days and then reweighed it.
Easy, simple, clear.
