lol.. I always get confused with those... Amphiprotic: The ability to behave as either Bronsted L acid or bronsted l base examples: water, Hydrogen carbonate ion so in other words an amphiprtoic subtance can act either as a proton donor or proton acceptor Amphoteric: Oxides that react with acids to form salts, but which also react with alkalis ...Amphoteric oxides can be neutralised by either an acid or a base examples: Al2O3, ZnO, PbO, SnO and As2O3 Last edited by physician; 12 Jul 2005 at 10:17 PM. | |

Don't believe it! If they were the same thing... why are there two different terms? Why are there two different terms? (which are confusingly similar)

| Abhishek's Rani.. | simple explanation: Amphiprotic means the ability of a substance to act as both an acid ad a base in solution. Amphoteric oxides are those which react with acids to form salts but also react with alkalis.

Specifically, amphiprotic substances can donate OR accept protons (H+), but not necessarily in an acid/base reaction. ANYWAY, as "amphoteric" is not in the syllabus...
