Do you have to know both tests for one anion/cation and for when they are in mixtures?

This is soo confusing, in Ahmad's notes, he has them both, but in Conquering and Jacaranda it' all over the place, help!! THANKS A LOT :)

Yes you need to know both, but these two things are not as distinct as you seem to think, by understanding how to identify one anion/cation by itself, you can apply similar principle to eliminate the possibilities of certain cation/anions-often based on precipitation reactions and solubility rules(I highly recommend you to have a good grasp of general solubility rules), you can understand how to identify different cations/anions in a mixture and what kind of substances you should add to narrow down the possible identities.
