The gradient system employs an alternative linear magnetic field in combination with the internal large static magnetic field.

This in turn creates spatialization and x,y and z plane dimensions from the precessing Hydrogen atoms within the tissue being examined. Additionally, this creates the differing images from within the body constructing a 3D image.
