We were told to know that VNTRs are the parts of a person's genome that actually vary; you have to realise that about 99.9% of human DNA is identical from one person to another. The differences - which are the parts used for fingerprinting - are concentrated in the VNTRs. Oh, and VNTR stands for variable number tandem repeat, I think.
