What keeps the nucleus intact??

If the nucleus contains protons and neutrons, shouldnt there be repulsion between the protons becuase they are positively charged? and if this is the case then how do these particles remain inside the nucles rather than roaming free!? is there some barrier or mechanism that holds them inside??

Consider a proton inside the nucleus. If something moves it a short distance away, the nuclear force pulls it right back, but if it somehow got far enough, the electric repulsion would push it away, never to return.

It's pretty cool actually, it's also what underpins nuclear fission.
