I just discovered that to get honours at Monash, you don't need to do any research unit, you just need to get at least a mid-credit (67), and to get first class honours you need a mid-distinction (73).But if you choose to do a research unit, you get a 20% bonus on the grade, which can put you into a higher class of honours. How does Honours work at other unis? |

Units done on exchange don't count. From 2013 onwards it's going to be based on the completion of a dissertation, not a WAM. |

Today, 12:25 AM ![]() ![]() | Re: Law Honours UWS currently has 2 systems running. One only applies to people such as myself who started before the new system was introduced since we're sort of in a crossover period. That system wasn't based on an honours research unit, just marks. But unlike some other unis, it's done on GPA on Cores and overall rather than just overall GPA or WAM so it makes things a little trickier ![]() Honours 1 = 6 GPA in cores (distinction level) and 6 GPA overall. Honours 2.1 = 5.8(high credit) in cores and 5.8 overall Honours 2.2 = 5.5 (mid credit) in cores and 5.5 overall. I would love to have it done on WAM cause to get Honours 1 all i would have to do is pass my units next semester, but under the GPA rules due to having one credit that isn't balanced out by a HD in my cores instead I need a D and a HD in cores which yes, is good motivation to do well, but is also far more difficult ![]() New system for people who started after the cross over period: Honours 1 = HD for your research unit and 6.0 GPA overall Honours 2.1 = D for your research unit and 5.8 GPA overall Honours 2.2 = C for research and 5.5 GPA overall The law school has said that they're now using the research basis to make it more useful for sudents who want to go on to do a PhD or other post grad research and also so it aligns with other honours rules at UWS for other colleges/schools which seem to require certain GPA level + research unit.

26 Oct 2009, 10:42 AM ![]() | Re: Law Honours At Macquarie, it used to be a WAM of at least 71 for second class, and for first class it was a WAM of 76+ and a 10 000 or 20 000 word thesis for an Advanced Legal Research Project unit. I think they are in the process of changing it now because the page has changed, and it no longer mentions the thesis, just says something about 'outstanding merit' - so probably WAM based. |

I only ask as you mention that you need a mid-distinction @ 73, but i know my uni a D requires at least 75. And a 'mid credit' for mine i would assume would be 70 or so, since credit ranges from 65 - 75. Just curious
