Is it necessary to know every detail of all the historians we study in the ext his course? When are we going to be asked about their life and works? Would it be better (from what i've understood) to just write about their effect on history, their approach and opinion on history, and what influenced the former?

Nah we don't have to know every single detail about a historian we learnt in class, just enough so you can answer the four questions on them, if we were to ever to a comparative essay on our historians in class. We'll probably be learning 10+ contemporary issues/debates and maybe have at least 2-3 historians for each, one, if you really can't be bothered remembering the rest, but as long as you make sure they are the most influential historian regarding that issue eg ANZAC legend you'd talk about Charles Bean or Ellis Asmead-Bartlett
