Some of the characters are okay in preview but are coming up wrong when posted... weird. So if I seem to be talking gibberish, that's why.

Re: Chinese Second Language

My friend told me something:

She said that the examiners will be more easier on you in speaking (orals) if you aren't Chinese/Asian. Is this true? Anyone have any experience on this?

And I'm not finding it easy I have to lookup alot of characters in the dictionary.

Re: Chinese Second Language

are you asian?

well although vcaa will assure there's no bias, remember that examiners are still human beings & are capable of favouritism... so i guess they will probably be more strict with asians.

thank god someone else doesn't think it's easy.

Re: Chinese Second Language

Technically speaking Asian and non-Asian students should be asked questions of the same degree of difficulty. But I did it last year and asking around non-asian kids seemed to be asked easier questions?

But anyways, it's not that hard (trust me, I got 45 raw which placed me in the top 13 students in Victoria, seriously doubt it is true though ). With the oral the biggest worry is pre-exam nerves which I had plenty of. But once you get in their it's alright.

Re: Chinese Second Language

I am 1/2 Asian, but you wouldn't be able to tell (or at least most people don't know until I tell them). People have thought I was a wog (!) on more than one occasion.

I'm so afraid that next year the examiners will ask me questions and I will have no idea what they're saying! I'm trying to improve my speaking/listening by watching Chinese dramas and listening to music (Jay Chou, lol), but arggggghhh I feel like a failure. I hate school right now.

What are you suggesting? That watching TVB dumb me down? That Jay Chou is one of the worst singers to ever walk the Earth? That you a child prodigy and can speak better Mandarin than Kevin Rudd? What?

What do you suggest I do then, in addition to conversing with others and studying texts? Maybe I should sit under a rock imported from China and try and absorb all it has to offer. I would be super happy if I got 32 raw, btw.

What I'm saying is that what Jay Chou or any other artists sings about has no relevance to VCE CHINESE 2ND LANGUAGE. What is relevant is in the study design.

If you want to do well follow these steps.
1) start working hard now, I only started at the start of the term 2 holidays
2) Finish your work for the oral ASAP (definitely before end of term 3) and start to memorise it slowly. Leaving it to a couple weeks before the exam places too much stress on you. Also whenever your teacher has time practice with him/her. And if you have a parent who can speak Chinese get them to ask questions which you anticipate will be asked. If you want I can send you the questions that I anticipated they would ask me, just PM me
3) Learn the mandatory 600 or so vocab characters. If you do this there should be nothing that suprises you on the written exam.
4) Get your teacher to burn you a CD fully of listening tracks and give you questions relevant to these and practice. Also get your teacher to teach you good note taking techniques as this will make getting info while listening much easier.
5) Write heaps of essays and badger your teacher to correct them.

Also, there is a possibility that I'm better at Mandarin than Kevin Rudd, just maybe
