The system's rigged with heaps of Australian-born Chinese who speak fluent Mandarin at home taking Chinese as a Second Language. But they still do so poorly. HAHAHAHAA

Re: Chinese Second Language

They own us at listening though. So many times we hear a phrase, have no idea what it means, look at the chinese background people and they know it without any effort, and it's annoying because most of them still qualify for SL not SLA.
Next year our teacher told us listening on the exam will only be out of 10 marks, not 30. Which should make it a lot fairer, because the other sections are a lot easier

Re: Chinese Second Language

i really don't believe memorising the 600 is absolutely imperative to be honest. i had shocking (absolutely shocking. beyond comprehension really) recall of characters but still did fairly well in chinese. i think that if you know that you wont be able to remember that amount of characters in the year and that your chinese is not as strong as everyone else, then it is more effective to be able to recall them in pin yin, but also to be able to exploit the fact that you have a dictionary alongside, and take notice of effective vocab usage as opposed to just knowing a long list of words that may or may not be worthwhile. but that's just my experience.

Re: Chinese Second Language

I started chinese in 2007. In a year (well, 10 months) I covered about 4 years of coursework...
This year I'm doing chinese by correspondence with the VSL.... I'm really nervous!
Any advice?

Re: Chinese Second Language

hai all, i'm new here. wanna ask something, hope you all can help me.
I'm finding a saturday school that takes Chinese Second language as VCE subject but can't find one. I live in Roxburgh Park, around Tullamarine. Any1 knows a school that offers Chinese as second language? i'm studying year 11 by the way. Thanks all.

Re: Chinese Second Language

Actually it's quite the contrary... Well, it depends. If you:

1. Work consistently throughout the year.
2. Practice writing essays on a range of topics that are likely to appear on the exam.
3. Badger your teacher to correct the essays you write and get them to give you contructive criticism.
4. Practice speaking Chinese regularly, in particular the general conversation and detailed study.
5. Practice your aural skills by listening to a range of audio tapes specifically made for VCE Chinese students.
6. Learn the vocabulary list.

Then getting 30+ raw isn't very hard.
