Study score is a ranking or not?

You can hide this advertisement by registering.
Some people say that you need to be in the top 10% of the state to get above 40. However, that means all subjects should have the same number of 40+ and this is obviously not the case. So does it mean study score is just a derived score from your exams+sacs?

Each subject has the same percentage of students above any given raw study score. The actual number is therefore dependent on the amount of people enrolled in the subject statewide.

But how come somtimes more students get 50 and 48 then 49? Shouldn't it be least 50's and gradually more 49, 48? (I am referring to heraldsun literature scores)

That's just for literature though, could be an exception...

As a general rule, yes, but 50 is often the exception.

Generally, the top 0.2% of a subject cohort score 50. But if more that get perfect marks in all 3 GAs, they all get 50. To restrict it to 0.2% would involve arbitrary discrimination. As a consequence, most subjects end up with more 50s than 49s, and a few (Further Maths) with more 50s than 48s or even 47s.

Or I may be completely overthinking this and it could just be that more of the people that scored 50 agreed to have their results published.

Re: Study score is a ranking or not?

Do you guys know the rough % numbers for 45+ scores?
Like top 0.2% gets 50 study score, top __% gets 49, etc.
just curious..

You're doing Methods; any such percentages apply only to "large" subjects, when study scores follow a normal distribution with a mean of 30 and standard deviation 7.

(In theory, anyway.)

Re: Study score is a ranking or not?

While it is partly due to the fact that study scores cannot be arbitrarily truncated (so that two people with the exact aggregate for the subject have two different study scores, which is ludicrous), the main reason for the fact that there are more 50's than 49's and that is because of this:

0.21% get 50
0.33% get 49 AND ABOVE which means that 0.33-0.21 = 0.12% get 49
0.51% get 48 AND ABOVE which means that 0.51-0.33 = 0.18% get 48

So a higher percentage get 50 than specifically 49 and specifically 48.
