Push to make uni entrance fair for all

Push to make uni entrance fair for all

NATALIE CRAIG

October 18, 2009
STATEWIDE intelligence tests for year 12 students would be an alternative to VCE scores in a bold proposal to make university selections fairer.
Aptitude tests would sit alongside the exam system in a new model to be presented to the State Government this Tuesday.
The tests, which could not be studied for, would give students who have the intellectual capacity for a degree course, but not the knowledge, a chance of getting a place. ''It's about giving prospective university students more ways of showing what they can do,'' said Richard James, from the University of Melbourne's Centre for the Study of Higher Education, which developed the model in a review of Victoria's university entrance system.
Most students win places at university based on their ENTER rank, calculated by their performance in the Victorian Certificate of Education. Final-year exams, which start next week, count for more than half a student's score.
A groundswell of experts want to break ENTER's dominance by introducing a more flexible system that gives hope to students who may not fare well in exams - particularly those from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds.
Industry leaders will meet Education Minister Bronwyn Pike and Skills Minister Jacinta Allan at a round table on Tuesday to discuss alternative paths to university.
The Australian Council for Educational Research will argue that aptitude testing, which features in the US enrolment processes, is one of the best ways to include disadvantaged students.
''Say you're at a school that doesn't have a chemistry lab - we can still show, independent of context, your ability to study that subject,'' said research fellow Hamish Coates.
Neither Ms Allan nor Ms Pike would comment on the proposals, but a spokesman said the talks would inform a report into university participation.
Universities must move to meet an ambitious Federal Government target for disadvantaged students to account for 20 per cent of enrolments by 2020. Nationally, 16 per cent of places are taken by people from low socio-economic backgrounds.
Disadvantaged students account for just 8 per cent of enrolments at the University of Melbourne, according to the latest figures, and 12 per cent at Monash and RMIT. Only two universities exceed the 20 per cent target - Victoria University and the University of Ballarat.....................

It continues on

I wondered what people think? I know there are people on this forum that would explode with stress with the thought that something more than four (well hopefully) digits could determine their chances of university place . Interesting concept i think, seems to be looking to the US.

Wow what retards. The VCE is an intelligence test. Much more rigorous, comprehensive and indicative than any 'IQ" test (which the GAT already acts as). There are already safeguards for disadvantaged students.

There's been a lot of talk of dismantling the VCE system in some shape or form!

Here's some links about it:

Is it true that VCE is going to be replaced by HSC in a few years? - Merspi
