Question why does john wade during the later chapters

pull apart and drop the radio he had in the boat in the river? Is it of theme importance or something?

In any case, can someone explain why he did it?

Re: why does john wade during the later chapters

John Wade has always sought love throughout his life, whether it be through magic or politics it seems to stem from the love he never received from his father as a child. This is why he becomes so paranoid when Kathy disappears, because she was the only one who still loved him. And by him dumping the radio in the river signifies that he's learnt to accept that she's gone because he did use her in a way, always making sure that he had control over her. So basically he gives up the search, for Kathy, for love.
