Should I choose Lit or English

I have no particular talent for English. And for whatever reason, currently in year 11, I'm doing lit at the moment (actually I'm doing a hybrid english sem 1 and lit sem 2). I don't know why, maybe it's because we have more freedom in writing, but I am enjoying lit more than my semester 1 english. How hard is lit in year 12, because I would do it unless it's extremely complicated and impossible to do (particularly for someone who has no natural talent for English). Thanks.

Do both. You may become disillusioned with the difficulty of year 12 Lit. I was getting ace scores last year for Lit and average scores for English. This has since changed.

Yes, I thought about that. But I honestly don't have room for an extra English, nor is it one of my favourite subjects that I want to do two of them.

It's the opposite for me. I'm doing both Lit and English. I never did Lit 1/2 and had aced English continuously, topping the year level (was heralded as a possible dux) up until this year. I'm doing terribly in English and have surprisingly been acing Lit.

I know you say you have other subjects you want to do, but unless you think you'll do really well in these other subjects, or don't need the extra Humanitarian subject as you're trying to get into something like medicine or other health related occupation, I'd definetely recommend a Lit/English combo. This combo beats a spec/methods combo for someone who is really good at math, even, as either one can be in your top 4.

No way. I do English and lit, as well as methods and spec, and definitely think the latter is the better combo if you wish to maximise your ENTER. Lit is basically the specialist of the English domain, except it scales a lot less. You could similarly compare English and methods. In terms of getting the greatest reward for effort, methods and spec are far more beneficial.

Re: Should I choose Lit or English

You do have a point, but if you're only doing English or Lit and flunk one of them then you're in a bit of trouble with a 20-30ish study score in your top 4. If you do both Lit and English and do well on one and flunk the other, as I have done, strangely, then you no longer have to have a very low study score in your top 4 (and it might not push down a higher score into your bottom 2). In that sense, it does make a significant difference.

Re: Should I choose Lit or English

I'd recomend both... but if you havnt got room for two then probably lit. in year 11 lit i was getting probably about a C average, and have topped the class this year. I find it a fair bit easier and less work than normal english, plus there is less competition. However, that said, i reckon doing both really helps the other and its helped my writing improve heaps.
it probably also depends on what aspects of english your not so good at too. i know my weakest area is lang analysis, which isnt really that vital to lit.

Re: Should I choose Lit or English

The majority of the people who choose lit are really good at english. While there's a large proportion of bad english student in mainstream english. I asked my teacher the same thing and she said it is very rare for somebody to do better in lit than mainstream english. So if you would like to maximise your score for english then I suggest mainstream. But if you really do hate regular english then just do lit.

Re: Should I choose Lit or English

I picked up English in unit 3, after doing 1/2 lit. You can do it that way around, but friends have told me it's a really bad idea to start lit in year 12, as you need to learn a different style of writing and skills as opposed to English which really takes three weeks of cramming to achieve the required level.
so if you like lit, you might as well enjoy it for as long as possible, knowing you can transfer out if it get's too hard.
2010 VCE doesn't automatically put English in the top 4, does it?
