Re: bio or physics?

Due to personal experience, I think I'll be able to answer the question from both point of views.

In Year 11, I started with bio but after finishing Unit 1, I found it too easy and boring since most of the material simply required a from of ROTE learning. Then I switched to physics Unit 2 for a challenge and continued on to Year 12 for Units 3 and 4. No regrets.

Now to answer your questions directly
1)time consuming- biology: lots of reading and memorising so it sure takes up a hell lot of time. If you like reading, go for bio.
2)difficult- physics BUT only since you need to understand the concepts, not memorise them. Eventually it all becomes automatic and you solve the questions with little thought in mind.

Also physics scales up 3 marks while bio goes up by 1. Furthermore, it also falls down upon your other subjects. If you're focusing on Maths related subjects (methods, spesh), then go for physics.

Re: bio or physics?

I agree with Cobalt, but I would like to add a few more points

Biology, because its seen as a lesser science, is not generally done by the more scientifically oriented students (who generally go towards Physics and Chemistry), as of such I'm finding it (of course this is just me), quite easy to stay first in. However as Cobalt said there is a lot of memorising to do, and marking criteria can be VERY specific.

Physics on the other hand has stiffer competition, especially from the extension kids who are exceptionally good at maths. But, despite what people say it isn't that hard to do decently in (and it scales better than biology), roughly half the marks in a test will be based on maths- and its not hard considering that you are given a formula sheet. There is content for physics, but I'v found its not that hard to learn and remember.

If you want to ace either subject, and get a reaaaally good mark, your going to have to study your ass off either way. Really it depends on what you find easier- using maths formulas or memorising slabs of information.

I'm probably not the best person to give you advice on which science to choose, as I couldn't make up my own mind and ended up picking all three lol.

Re: bio or physics?

Well, I'm the only one doing all three- and they completely screwed me over for my subject choice anyway :P

Re: bio or physics?

Coming from a person who dropped bio in like their first lesson of yr 11, and kept phys all the way through, I can only highly recommend phys.

In all honesty, the physics course is pretty short since they cut out heaps from motors and you basically have like 4 sections per module with motors and gen being 5. As people have stated, physics is VERY concept based. At first I didn't get all that much of it because I thought of phys like chem/bio and just tryed to memorise everything. This is a big no no. You need to get the concepts almost entirely and then get used to applying it. Thats what most of the top people at our school did. The other thing is that its good for discussions so you need to get into it. It really helps if you try and enjoy and appreciate the subject. This will ensure you succeed!
