We've been doing The Iliad book 6, The Persians, Pericles funeral oration (not a set text) and now we're doing the Parthenon. We have done a few SACs, the teacher split the analysis SAC into 3 parts.

I'm so glad someone finally posted here. How are you going in the subject?

Re: Where are the 2009 Classics Students?!

Hey! Classics seems to have a ridiculous amount of sacs, we've had 2 or 3 already I think and another one coming up. We just do passage analysis... Our first one was just on background things about Ancient Greece, the second sac was on the Iliad, and the third sac was on the Persians, the next sac will be on The Clouds. Our teacher has chosen all literary texts, I think your teacher must have chosen the Parthenon. Its harder to do sculpture I think, esp. if you look at the end of year exam.
Here's a sample of my sac just for the sake of it

The passage beginning “Menelaus, his spear’s long shadow looming,” and ending “…strip the corpses up and down the plain,” is taken from the first few pages of Book 6 in the epic Iliad written by Homer during the Dark Ages approx 800BC. It details glorious battle and the repercussions on the Mycenaean age, focused on the legendary Trojan war of c.1250BC. This passage is significant in exploring the reality of war and the heroic code particularly through the disregard of the heroic code displayed by Menelaus and Agamemnon is contrasted with the nobility of Hectors personality and actions. The passage involves a pitiful Adrestus pleading for mercy, offering a ‘priceless ransom’ to which Menelaus is moved briefly, considering mercy but is dominated by the violent and rash Agamemnon who upon entering the scene builds the passage into a fierce and violent turmoil and murder exemplified by Nestor’s bloodthirsty urges and thus a direct cross of the heroic code.

The initial impression of the passage is menacing, describing the ‘looming’ shadow of Menelaus’ spear. The image of the spear in our minds evokes an immediate sense of danger and threat. The consequent image of Adrestus ‘hugging his knees’ make ETC ETC

and then a conclusion which has to include socio-historical sig.

Did you do the same thing? The teacher has been using a marking scheme that has A, B, etc. I've been getting A's so I'm pretty pleased. I'm not sure whats happening next in Classics? Unlike my other subjects where I know exactly what I'm doing, Classics I'm very dependent on the teacher and on class time as we have no homework. I think she's the chief assessor for Classics? But yeah she's a good teacher.

I think we start doing comparative sacs?

Although the end of year exam has essay like extended response which look fun but a bit freaky haha. Its annoying that it counts for fifty percent of our mark! All my subjects are like that so heres to hoping I won't fuck up at the end of the year ha.

You have the chief assessor as your teacher? Cool!
I like the SAC sample. We did the scene between Hector and Andromache from that book of the Iliad.

We have a lot of homework, mostly reading. Not everyone does the reading which is kind of annoying. I'm doing well in the subject so far (A+s), but I think I didn't do so well in the last SAC. Fingers crossed, I hope I do OK.

Oh, I'm doing it! We've got the essay SAC this week...I'm writing on Iliad book 6. Our other two texts were The Clouds and Thucydides.
