A quick note before I rattle this off:

To my knowledge, these results are not yet avaliable over the internet, however they are printed in today's Daily Telegraph. I don't know why, but as soon as they are/if they're in a place I haven't looked at yet, please provide the link so I may edit it into this thread so no-one thinks I'm lying!

For this uninitiated, the Daily Telegraph takes into account the candidature size of each school, therefore making its findings - in my opinion - a more accurate. :) Since it's accuracy has been debated in following pages, may I provide an example of what I mean:

SMH LIST:
1. School A - 300
2. School B - 150

TELEGRAPH LIST:
1. School B - 150/200 - 75%
2. School A - 300/1000 - 30%

-----
Key:

Exams sat: The number of exams taken by students at the school
DA (Distinguished Achiever): Exams in which 90% or more was achieved
%: The school's per cent rank is the number of DA's divided by the number of exams sat

This list is going to take ages to write, so I'll just rattle off the schools in groups of 50, then add all the other stuff in following edits

-GO HORNSBY! GO HORNSBY! GO HORNSBY! GO HORNSBY!!!-

And now for entertainment value:
Public outperforms private
^As printed on page 12 of the Daily Telegraph, Saturday the 17th December 2005. Written by Maralyn Parker.

"This year's HSC results confirm yet again that if you want the best education that money can't buy get your kid into a public selective school.

With 18 of the State's top 30 schools being public selective the HSC has become a matter of selective school competing against selective school for the state's best results.

Sydney Grammar, a very expensive private selective school, comes closest to joining the race at eighth place.

Among the selective schools there are a few rising stars. Hornsby Girls has jumped from sixth in 2003 (glitternote: we were 4th in 2004) to second place this year. If ever a school might give James Ruse a nudge for top position it will be Hornsby Girls.

Country Selectives such as Gosford High and Smith's Hill High in Newcastle (glitternote: BOSmembers have pointed out that this school is in Wollongong, not Newcastle!) are closing in on city selectives.

The time is rapidly approaching where private schools will not be represented among the very top academically performing schools.

That said, Killara High School, a garden variety co-ed public school, comes in as the top performing non-selective public school at 49. It has 1300 students and takes all children who live within its enrolment boundaries regardless of ability or disability.

Its fees are about $500 to $800 including course costs for a Yr 12 student."

-----

For my own 2 cents, I'm not really sure ANYONE could ever nudge James Ruse off their top spot. Yes, HGHS is now second (a FANTASTIC achievement), but we are still a good bit behind, as statistics will show (when I get around to typing them up).

Whilst I am VERY excited about school rankings (particularly HGHS, er, is it obvious now that I'm an ex-hornsby girl?), I do think they should not be taken as some sort of divine message about the future of your school's achievements. As results have shown, people are doing better each year and it's getting to the point where it almost doesn't matter what school you go to - you can always do very well :)

Oh, and since it's touched on below - I'm perfectly aware that HSC results aren't everything in life. As a university student, I'm also highly aware that people who do really well or really badly in the HSC don't neccessarily repeat this patten whilst in university. Uni is a COMPLETELY different ballgame. But hey, these are just HSC results. I'm not claiming that they're anything other than what they are. Just getting the record straight.

Well, not to take away from your glory, but one of the reasons that has been cited for females performing rather well in the hsc is that male brain development is slower than females, and thus at 16/17 they have quite an advantage. This gap decreases during university.

I am quite publicly boasting about HGHS pride right now just because I can. I'm perfectly aware that HSC results have no absolute bearing on University success - I am a uni student, y'know :)
